Block 29
1963,
going on vacation to Florida.
Pop in the cooler,
those little,
individual packages
of spreadable cheese
and club crackers were just new
and we had them.
Rolling down the highway,
snacks upon request,
books to read,
parents to talk to
(and oh how I always talked in the car,
poor Mom and Dad)
Pop in the cooler,
those little,
individual packages
of spreadable cheese
and club crackers were just new
and we had them.
Rolling down the highway,
snacks upon request,
books to read,
parents to talk to
(and oh how I always talked in the car,
poor Mom and Dad)
when this song came on the radio:
(If I had to choose just one day)
If I had to choose just one day
To last my whole life through
It would surely be that Sunday
The day that I met you
Newborn whippoorwills were calling from the hills
Summer was a-coming in but fast
Summer was a-coming in but fast
Lots of daffodils were showing off their skills
Nodding all together, I could almost hear them whisper
"Go on, kiss her, go on and kiss her"
If I had to choose one moment
To live within my heart
It would be that tender moment
Recalling how we started
Darling, it would be when you smiled at me
That way, that Sunday, that summer
(Newborn whippoorwills were calling from the hills)
(Summer was a-comin' in but fast)
(Lots of daffodils were showin' off their skills)
(Nodding all together, I could almost hear them whisper)
("Go on, kiss her, go on and kiss her")
If I had to choose one moment
To live within my heart
Recalling how we started
Darling, it would be when you smiled at me
That way, that Sunday, that summer

If you have never
heard it sung,
let alone sung by Nat King Cole,
you MUST LISTEN. . .
Daffodils are a blessing to me.
Nothing romantic about them
the song,
I find,
just relaxing . .
I hear it
and I mellow out immediately.
The same when I see daffodils,
especially the King Alfred variety . . .
they make me smile
and return me back
to a pleasant drive
from Indiana to Florida . . .
one day
One Sunday . .
but it was winter . . actually Christmas vacation.
An aside . . .
we were snowbound in Georgia
both going
and coming home.
But it was still a great vacation
spent with Lee and Margaret.
Dear Lord,
Thank you for Margaret and her mom, Aunt Ora. You know how much they meant to me.
Thank you for allowing me to return to Florida at an age when I would have more memories than the memory of losing my pink bunny on the train when Mom and I went when I was quite young. Well, I guess I do remember the berths being made up on that train ride also . . but losing that pink bunny was a heart breaker.
Thank you for giving us daffodils. As the song says, they do show their skills when they nod in the breeze.
Thank you for giving me so many visuals that make me smile. I never knew I had so many until I started this sampler.
You are so wise with the gifts you bestow on each and every one of us.
Amen

I call them Daffodils, too. .. and the ones with the short trumpet part are the jonquils to me. But honestly, I have no idea which is which
