Block 62

Spider Web Stitch for Thickness

Give me a head with hair,
long beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming, streaming,
flaxen, waxen
Give me down to there,
hair, shoulder length or longer
Here baby,
there, momma,
everywhere, daddy, daddy

Hair,
flow it,
show it
Long as God can grow, my hair.
 ~Chorus to the song Hair

Yep,
my 63nd Blessing
is my not just hair
but Thick Hair.

I am SO LUCKY
to be a third generation,
on both sides of the family tree
who had thick hair.

Now,
I'm not talking
just thick hair . . .
I'm talking
T-H-I-C-K hair.
Hair,
that when cut,
would still be heavy
and the cuttings
on the floor
could have made
someone a great head of hair.
Years ago,
when I got perms,
Jill would always
need to borrow
perm rollers from
everyone in the salon.
It must have taken her
at least an hour
to roll it.

Then,
if I let it dry
and combed it out
it looked like
BOZO hair!
Well, not read,
but bushy . . .
I had always wanted hair
like Angela Davis
in the 1960's
and I could have
worn it in an Afro
if I had Jill shaped it.

Modern Angela and 1960's/radical/Afro-headed Angela

Instead,
I would wash it
in the morning.
Then,
just before
I walked out the door
I picked it out . . .
if not,
it was a rats nest.
 Then,
the last thing
was to spray it with
a firm hairspray.

As it dried
through the day
(and most days
it was still wet
in the back at the
nape of the neck)
I had a great set
of waves/curls.

LOVED IT!
Didn't have to mess
with it.

When I finally
outgrew the wanting
of a perm,
I changed to an
ear length bob.
It worked great
in the winter.
Right after a cut,
I could go
about 2 weeks
without having to
use a curling brush
and dryer.
Just let it air dry
and it laid beautiful.
Then,
2" barrel curling brush
and strong blow dryer.

Only bad thing
with this haircut
was the sumer months.
The hair was so thick
at the nape of my neck,
that the water
just dripped down my neck
on the hot summer  days.

I found out
that a ponytail
took care of the sweating.
It lifted the hair
and air could get to
my scalp.

So now,
I get it cut in August
and then let it grow
until the next August . . .
gives me
 just the right length
for my summer pony.

Dear Lord,
Thank you for thick hair. It is so easy to take care of whether it is long or ear length . . . PLEASE keep me from cutting it shorter that ear length again . . . looked good to everyone else but I felt like a giant Q-tip.

My  hair also connects me to Grandma Pearl and Grandpa Gaumer . . . both had thick hair . . . especialy Grandpa. If I can keep my thick hair as long as he did,  then I will be very pleased.

Amen

My Mom is a hairdresser - she has always told me I had enough hair for 3 people. What's weird with my hair though - as I get older - it gets curlier!

I'm glad to that I have thick hair. I wouldn't want thin hair!

I'm a bit envious. I have long straight hair. I had think hair, but now one braid is only as thick as one of two used to be. Straight, flat hair was the "thing" in the 60's (about the only thing about me that was hip). Now I wear it up on a knot at the back of my head, most of the time.
